Biography Research: Film and Photography
Jeremy Deller
An English artist who often tells people's stories through photography, film and conceptual installation pieces. I found one of Deller's most interesting series to be 'Our Hobby is Depeche Mode'. A film and photography series in which Deller tells the stories of fans of Depeche Mode from around the world, collaborating with Nick Abrahams, to create the final film: 'The Posters Came From the Walls.' It is interesting how the artist is able to encapsulate the life and personality of his subjects through his film and photography, telling the story of European mega-fans of Depeche Mode. The final film was never released:
The film was never released – we suspect for a number of reasons. One of which was this German family, who dress their children up as members of the band and characters from the films. They somehow manage to get tickets for the press launches of albums, private meet and greets – and no one can work out how they do it. A lot of German fans seem to resent this family. Also the band have been so carefully branded and marketed that the fans' behaviour sometimes disrupts this carefully crafted image. The fans appropriate the band, they do their own thing and have a laugh; it's not clean, it's messy and it's chaotic. - Jeremy Deller

Nick Broomfield
Broomfield is an award winning English documentary filmmaker. His most famous works tend to touch on taboo subjects, learning about his subjects to an extreme length. His most famous films study names such as; Aileen Wuornos, Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, Biggie and Tupac and Lily Tomlin. His films also take political approaches, exploring subjects such as race, sex, crime and war. He is thought to have inspired more contemporary documentary film makers such as Louis Theoroux.
Louis Theoroux
An English documentary film maker, who much like Nick Broomfield, aims to ask the difficult questions on taboo subjects. Theoroux has an interesting technique of remaining neutral in situations whilst exploring the lives of his subjects. His documentary style tends to be fly on the wall, however he is also known for often provoking the people he does not agree with to challenge their views and perceptions. For example in his documentary film series, Weird Weekends, he aims to tell the stories of a range of alternative lifestyles across America, exploring the interesting, weird and sometimes disturbing lives of his subjects. He brings light to subjects such as transgender identities, race class, crime, drugs, and many more.
